‘A Real Disgrace is Happening in Guyana’, Venezuelan FM Gil Warns

The U.S. aims to destabilize the Caribbean region to hand oil resources to Exxon Mobil.
On Sunday, Venezuelan Foreign Affairs Minister Yvan Gil criticized the actions that Guyana is undertaking in relation to oil exploitation in the Essequibo region.

“A real disgrace is happening in Guyana: the surrender of its sovereignty to an insolent ambassador who, instead of addressing the issues of her out-of-control government, aims to destabilize the Caribbean region to seize our resources and hand them over to Exxon Mobil,” he said, referring to U.S. Ambassador to Guyana Nicole Theriot.
“Recklessly and shamelessly, President Irfaan Ali insists on installing U.S. military bases with the sole objectives of threatening Venezuela and trying to shirk the commitments and obligations established in the Geneva Agreement to peacefully resolve the controversy over the Essequibo region,” the Venezuelan diplomat added.
With those statements, the Bolivarian official reacted to what Ambassador Theriot said at a ceremony held on June 28, when she reaffirmed her country’s “unwavering support” of Guyana in the border controversy with Venezuela.
“Our military partnership is the strongest it’s ever been. Guyana has hosted Tradewinds, bringing over 1,000 partner nations’ personnel for exercises promoting regional stability. We have had countless military-to-military engagements,” she said, as reported by the online newspaper News Source Energy.
“We have allocated significant foreign military financing to support the Guyana Coast Guard under the Caribbean Basin Security Initiative, and we have worked with the GDF on institutional strengthening, air domain awareness, cyber defense, and in many other areas,” Theriot added.
During the ceremony, the U.S. ambassador also mentioned that her country has over 100 companies operating in Guyana, many of which are involved in the energy sector.
